On Saturday, January 14, 2023, the Geophysics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University held a Community Service Program (PkM). The event, which took place from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM WIB, was held at the Joint Lecture Building B of Tanjungpura University. It was attended by all lecturers of the Geophysics Study Program, as well as 50 students and several teachers from various high schools in Pontianak.
This activity was a collaboration with SMAIT Al-Mumtaz Pontianak and carried the theme “Enhancing the Role of Pontianak City Students in Realizing Disaster-Responsive Schools.” Muhardi, the head of the committee and a lecturer in Geophysics at Tanjungpura University, explained the importance of awareness regarding disaster potential in West Kalimantan, such as floods, landslides, tornadoes, and forest fires. According to him, awareness and preparedness must be instilled from an early age, including among students, to create disaster-responsive schools. Disaster-responsive schools are a strategic step in building preparedness among students, teachers, and the entire school environment.
Additionally, this PkM activity was integrated with the Geophysics Goes to School (GGTS) program initiated by the Geophysics Student Association (HMG) of Tanjungpura University. Tsa Tsa Aisyha Yuditha Azrrue, the head of HMG Tanjungpura University, stated that GGTS aims to introduce the Geophysics Study Program to students in Pontianak. The Geophysics Study Program itself has three areas of specialization: solid earth geophysics, river and estuary hydrology, and meteorology and climatology.
During the event, students were also introduced to various laboratory equipment commonly used in geophysical surveys, such as geoelectric instruments, current meters, and automated weather stations (AWS). Through this activity, it is hoped that students will not only gain a closer understanding of geophysics but also be prepared to face potential disasters in their environment.
