Exciting 2024 Geophysics Field Course At Karta Beach

Bengkayang – The students from the Geophysics Study Program (academic year group 2021) , Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Tanjungpura (Untan), has just completed their highly anticipated annual field course. This year, they took on the challenge at Karta Beach, Bengkayang Regency, over a four-day period from Sunday, January 28 to Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

Held every year in the 6th semester, this field course offers students hands-on experience that goes beyond the classroom, pushing their limits and exposing them to real-world challenges. This year, participants worked through six modules: Geology, Geoelectrics, Self Potential, Oceanography, Hydrology, and Meteorology.

Hands-On Experience in the Field

In the Geology module, students learned to identify and analyze rock formations and geological structures around Karta Beach. The Geoelectrics and Self Potential modules challenged them to use specialized equipment to detect underground resistivity and natural potential.

The Oceanography module brought them closer to the sea, studying currents, waves, and other physical characteristics of Karta Beach's waters. In the Hydrology module, students explored the water cycle and water resources in the coastal area. Lastly, the Meteorology module taught them how to observe and analyze atmospheric phenomena such as wind and rainfall.

From Field to Campus

After collecting data in the field, students will return to campus for the next phase: data processing, modeling, analysis, and interpretation. This crucial process allows them to turn raw data into valuable information applicable in various geophysical contexts.

Sharpening Skills and Connecting with Nature

This field course is not just about academics; it's also about building teamwork, resilience, and a love for nature. Students don't just learn from theory but apply their knowledge directly in the field, facing real environmental challenges.

Dr. Yoga Satria Putra, M.Si, Head of the Geophysics Study Program, expressed his pride in the students' enthusiasm and dedication. “This field course is a significant milestone in their education. They not only learn about techniques and theories but also how to work as a team and face challenges in the field.”

With enthusiasm and determination, the Geophysics students from FMIPA Untan returned from Karta Beach carrying a wealth of new experiences and knowledge. This field course not only enriches their academic understanding but also prepares them to become skilled geophysicists ready to tackle future challenges.
