West Kalimantan — An educational program titled Geophysics Goes to School (GGTS) was held once again from January 5 to 15, 2026, in various secondary schools across West Kalimantan. This program is an initiative by geophysics students and academics to introduce Earth sciences to students through interactive and practical approaches.
The GGTS program aims to enhance students’ understanding of natural phenomena such as earthquakes, extreme weather, and natural resource exploration. Through a communicative approach, participants are introduced to fundamental geophysical concepts that are closely related to everyday life.
The series of activities includes lectures, simple instrument demonstrations, interactive discussions, and educational quizzes designed to encourage active student participation. In addition, the team also shares information about study opportunities and career paths in geophysics, motivating students to pursue higher education in science and technology fields.
The program coordinator stated that GGTS is not only focused on knowledge transfer but also on raising awareness about the importance of disaster mitigation in West Kalimantan. “We hope this activity can broaden students’ perspectives and foster their interest in Earth sciences, which are highly relevant to Indonesia’s geographical conditions,” they said.
The program received positive responses from schools. Teachers consider this initiative highly beneficial, as it provides students with a different and more contextual learning experience.
With the implementation of Geophysics Goes to School, it is expected that more young people will become familiar with and interested in geophysics, as well as be better prepared to face potential natural disasters in the future.
